On April 13, 2019, the one-week PNG National Mining Safety Week came to a successful end at Madang Base, BSK Refinery and KBK Mine.
The annual event observed by PNG mines nationwide under the initiative of the Inspectorate of Mine with Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) aims to engage all workers in the mining sector to increase awareness on safety culture in the work place. This also includes communities near the mine impacted areas.
A variety of activities were organized on each site including safety poster competition, safety knowledge contest, fire fighting and emergency drills as well as performance of safety themed songs.
Both sites paid visits to community schools to celebrate the NMSW with teachers and students at community schools who are keen to learn the safety aspect of the mine and interested in working with mining companies such as Ramu NiCo when they grow up.
Free medical check-up provided by the Company to the local communities with health and safety awareness as part of the NMSW was also welcomed by the local communities and helped improve health conditions of local residents who are in desperate need of appropriate medical care.
During the NMSW, employees on both sites and at Madang Base were challenged to never walk past an unsafe act that can cause any fatality or cause injury, when the company aims to achieve zero harm and further stabilize its operation in 2019.
