Chinese employees working with Ramu NiCo have genuinely built a better understanding and wonderful working relationship with their PNG National colleagues.
This is obvious at Ramu NiCo Basamuk Port where a Chinese foreman Renjie Yu, is already a household name and is well-liked by his National colleagues.
Mr. Yu, who comes from Tianjin province of China joined the Ramu NiCo Project in 2012 and works at the Company’s Basamuk Port in Rai Coast district, Madang province.
“Papua New Guineans are friendly people and I enjoy working with them,” says Renjie.
As a foreman, Mr. Yu is responsible for the safety management of various operations at the Basamuk port. His duties among others include organizing work arrangement of nationals in the stevedoring duties and also organizing the pre-start safety meetings.
Mr. Yu’s philosophy of work centers around safety at work place as the Company constantly emphasizes on “Zero Harm”.
Mr. Yu is a hard worker and encourages PNG Nationals in his team to be dedicated and faithful to their employment thus complimenting Ramu NiCo’s primary focus on transferring life skills and knowledge to locals in the Project impact communities in Basamuk.
A PNG National colleague of Mr. Yu, Saluk Wang, who works as a Team Leader at Basamuk Port spoke highly of Mr. Yu, saying: “Renjie is a good boss, who is kind, very open, and sharing person”
Saluk says Mr. Yu and other Chinese employees are good at mentoring and also recognizing natural leadership skills among local employees and making them team leaders as part of the Company’s wider effort in localization.
Saluk added that Ramu NiCo’s contribution in socio-economic development in the far-flung in corner of Rai Coast district of Madang is adding value towards PNG government’s effort in reducing poverty, creating employment, food security improvement, gender equity and participation, and improved cash flows in rural PNG communities.
