Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Limited (RNML) has done its best to improve the local people’s lives and socio-economic development over a decade since the implementation of the project.
Always adhering to the concept of “One Ramu NiCo, One Community”, RNML never forgets to fulfill its social responsibilities, reduce and eradicate poverty by providing employment, employee training, health care, educational assistance and infrastructure projects etc. It also provides business for landowners and local enterprises, proactively develops friendship with local communities, and has established a good image in the local society.
Through the growth and development of the project itself, a large number of employment opportunities have been created, more and more local people have been employed by the company which would help the local people to reduce poverty and improve their lives. Over ten years of hard exploration and practice, up to now, RNML has 1007 local employees and indirectly employed 2,000 local employees through contractors.
RNML has set up an agricultural working group since 2008, hired agriculture technical experts from Hainan Tropical Crop Variety Resources Research Institute of China to give guidance on the spot. Relevant experts lead the local people to develop planting and aquaculture, build up agricultural planting demonstration bases and have cultivated a variety of vegetables and fruit trees.
RNML has donated 74 houses for about 700 local people, including a clinic, a police station and an office room of the Land Association in immigrant area. It also constructed 9 kilometers water supply pipeline from the mine to Danagar immigrant area which has been well maintained.
The company provides medical assistance to enhance people’s livelihood security by building clinic hospitals, donating medical materials, and conducting free physical examination. In December of 2022, RNML and the 12th batch of medical-aid teams from China went to Madang for free medical consultation, exchange diagnosis and treatment technologies with Madang Provincial Hospital.
RNML has invested several millions of kina to build and maintain 24 schools in the project-impacted areas. 427 children of landowners were provided with tuition support through the community development fund. In 2022, RNML invested in building 4 primary schools and purchasing computer desks for areas along inland pipelines and coastal pipelines, 2 primary school classrooms and 2 teachers’ offices for KBK mining area. It provided tuition support for 168 students in primary schools, middle schools and universities to complete their annual studies.
From 2020 to 2023, RNML conducted 36,189 training sessions, accumulating a total of 136,896.8 man-hours. The training covered various subjects, including HSE, heavy equipment operation, vehicle driving, special equipment operation, welding, scaffolding, machining, mechanics, fitting, dogging, rigging, taxation and accounting, payroll processing, mining supervision, and more. This initiative has not only benefited the self-development of employees but also contributed to the upskilling of residents in project-impacted areas.
RNML has found its own way to help the nation and its people in the developing countries like Papua New Guinea and accumulated rich experience in fulfilling social responsibilities, building and operating local projects and helping local governments and people to alleviate poverty. It can be a model and reference for China enterprise to “go global”.
