Ramu NiCo’s Basamuk Refinery rescued a mother on 20th of this month who was facing complication in delivering her baby.
The mother of two children had difficulty in delivering her baby when her husband rushed to Ramu NiCo’s Community Affairs Office for help. She was assisted and delivered her new born baby girl at around 08:30 pm on Saturday.
The husband Dau Phillip said he was scared if his wife Yune Kuff would not make it due to difficulty with child birth.
“Her condition started normal and then got worse as it was getting towards the night and I had no option to save her life,” Phillip said.
He said the only option for him was to rush to RNML Community Affairs Office for help and fortunately his wife was assisted and delivered their baby safely.
The husband works with a locally owned company that works on contract basis in and around the Basamuk Refinery.
In November 2023 Ramu NiCo’s Basamuk Refinery CA office also saved another mother who was facing complication in delivering her baby. She was timely assisted and transported from the Refinery to Modilon General Hospital in Madang town.
The wife Yangiam Geyo was a local woman from Sinanga Village next to the refinery. She was also facing difficulty in delivering her baby.
RNML Community Affairs Department reported that the husband Danny Nagere seeked assistance at the refinery at around 02:00 pm to move her to Ganglau for medical assistance and delivery.
However, at Ganglau, the Nursing Officer Mr. Martin Uma told the husband to refer her to Madang Town since Ganglau Aid post didn’t have enough equipment and medical drugs to assist with her situation.
Ramu NiCo’s Community Affairs Superintended Mr. Andy Hu said at around 05:30 pm the pregnant mother, her husband and Ganglau Nursing Officer Mr. Uma all travelled to Madang on a small boat (dinghy) that the refinery arranged for them, however lost the baby on the 20th of November 2023 at Modilon General Hospital.
Mr Hu said the refinery has been assisting with cases like this where people always come at the last minute for help and that is something that’s too risky.
“The locals need to understand that the company wants to assist but not at the really last minute. Let’s be prepared, rather than causing all of us stress,” the superintendent said.
