Enny Marason is 28years old female who hails from Markham, Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea which hosts the Country’s high number of industries and is the second capital city of the country.

She studied Environmental Health studies for four years at Divine Word University and began working for Ramu NiCo in 2020.

August 25, 2024 will go down in the history book of miss Marason, a young and energetic Environment Advisor employed at Ramu NiCo’s Health, Safety and Environment department at the Basamuk refinery in Raicaost, Madang Province.

As the international flight she was on took off and sped off the airport run way, Miss Marason took a last look out of the plane window with her cheeks rose revealing her sweet smile knowing that her dream of her first international flight from Port Moresby came true while she whispered slowly in her mind, “Bye Papua New Guinea, I shall see you again after three weeks,” she said.

Miss Marason was the only female participant her employer, Ramu NiCo selected to attend the 2024 China Copper Cup Overseas Enterprises Local Team Leaders Comprehensive Management Skills Competition and she travelled along with nine male participants representing team Ramu NiCo from Madang, Papua New Guinea.

She and her male colleagues undertook eleven days’ training on comprehensive management skills organized by Beijing Polytechnic Institute Nonferrous Metals Industry Talent Centre to equally compete on the same stage with outstanding contestants from countries such as Ethiopia, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Peru, Guinea, Mongolia and Zambia in Chifeng, a northwest China city.

When she reached her destination, she was amazed on the revelation of China before her. Of Course, she had seen China in video footages and magazines but not until the day that she set foot first time and walked through the streets of China’s capital city Beijing .

To sweeten her stay in China, the Beijing Polytechnic Institute and Ramu NiCo Beijing Office meticulously arranged cultural and historical sites visits to assist broaden Miss Marason’s apprehension on Zhongguo’s (China) traditional culture.

She visited the historical sites such as Temple of Heaven, Forbidden Palace/City, Beijing Museum, Beijing Bairong World Trade Center, and the Great Wall of China.

Back to the main purpose of her travel, Miss Marason noted that the comprehensive management skills training spans a 11-day period and features a diverse and comprehensive curriculum.

It encompasses courses like “Chinese Bridge” aimed at facilitating participants’ acquisition of the Chinese language and deeper comprehension of China, along with “China + Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation “designed to nurture a cohort of multi-faceted junior management personnel proficient in both Chinese and technology. Additionally, there are training sessions focused on workshop production site management skills and simulation exercises for the competition.

“The objective of the training course is to enhance the comprehensive management skills of overseas enterprises local team leaders through systematic learning and practice, covering multiple aspects such as cultivating team management talents, serving international capacity cooperation and build a platform for overseas enterprises employees to communicate and enhance friendships, strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges with countries along the “Belt and Road Initiative“, learn from each other and jointly pursue the dream of modernization. The training helps me acquire management skills and acquainted with competition rules,” she said in a report that she wrote.

The 2024 China Copper Cup Competition was attended by 64 regional members from all over the world and lasted for 2days.

An extra day was given for the closing ceremony in the northwest China’s Chifeng city. It has three assessable parts. For individual theoretical online exam, the scope of the test includes basic knowledge on team safety production management, 5S management at the production site, and role recognition of team leaders. For this online test, Miss Marason scored 72% for a personal score.

The contestants were then required to give a competitive speech under the theme of “Competing for Team Leader Role” in our current job.

According to Miss Marason, the speeches were to be done strictly in 10 minutes with inclusive of translation and a question to be asked by judges and a right response to be replied forthwith.

She presented a speech competing for a team leader role for Basamuk refinery environment team.

The question the Judges asked after her speech was, “You are a team leader, what will you do when a team member encounter emotional stress on-site?”

Her response was, being a team leader in the work place; she would encourage self-care, practice mindfulness, delegate tasks smartly, set realistic goals, foster a positive work environment, take breaks and practice time management.

“I would also recommend that stress management training programs are conducted to enable the team; identify causes of stress, teach effective stress management techniques, build resilience, encourage self-reflection and promote culture of wellbeing,” she said.

Miss Marason said,  the China Copper Cup skills training and competition is not only a platform to display skills, but also a bridge to promote international exchanges and cooperation”.

It gives her the opportunity to understand advanced technologies as well as management experiences. She believed that through this event, she will be able to work together with others to promote the development of the non-ferrous metal industry in Papua New Guinea.

“Going to China and participated in this competition is an extremely precious experience for me. I have not only gained knowledge but also greatly broadened my horizons. I witnessed with my own eyes China’s prosperity and development, as well as China’s modernization process and scientific and technological innovation achievements,” Miss Marason said.

“Whether it is in the bustling urban scene or advanced industrial facilities, I am shocked in admiration, at the same time, I felt the keenness and kindness of the Chinese people (Zhongguo ren),” she said.

“This personal experience has made my understanding of China more comprehensive and insightful and I deeply realized that China is leading the world’s development trend with its unique charm and strength,” Miss Marason added.

Miss Marason thanked the co-organizers, organizers, referees and staffs for building a platform for her and her colleagues to participate. She said she would continue to work hard to improve herself with the valuable experiences of the competition and contribute her strength to the development of the non-ferrous metal industry in Papua New Guinea.

As a Bronze medalist for individual performance and recipient of Group Proficiency Award for onsite group leadership assessment, Marason wished for the next Ramu NiCo team to distinctively perform in the next China Copper Cup.
