The Ramu NiCo Management Limited continues to uphold one of its commitments for employment in terms of promoting equal employment and promotion opportunities for all staff by continuing to recruit local men and women from the surrounding and project impact communities to join the company.
The health safety and environment department of Basamuk (BSK) Refinery is going through a hiring process for its emergency response team (ERT), of which these local men and women are expected to start work this week.
Deputy general manager, health safety and environment (HSE), Paul Thompson said: “What we are doing first is internal promotions, so where people have shown initiative and have all necessary skills, we are promoting to higher roles.
“Four trainees have been promoted to officer positions and are all local young men.
An officer is moving into a supervisory role, who has been here for a number of years and meets all the criteria and we’ll also be bringing in half a dozen new trainees, men and women from the local villages.
“These young men and women will have no skills and no knowledge of the job but the requirement for us (RNML) is that they have grade 8 education. But we’re looking for initiative, fitness, people who are willing to take on new challenges and not just having a job for the sake of having a job.
“Over time, these young men and women from the local villages will learn how to wear breathing apparatus, how to use fire hoses, how to operate trucks, turn the pumps on and off on the trucks, how to operate road accident rescue equipment which are hydraulically powered and will also learn how to enter confined spaces and do rescues, do height rescues with ropes and abseiling.
“There are a whole lot of skills that these young men and women will learn and that they will take with them through their careers and as is in other places. Being locals, they will stay here and they will be the future supervisors, trainers and even superintendents of this team.”
