NINE chainsaw operators and their supervisors at Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Limited’s Kurumbukari (KBK) Mine have recently undergone a four-week Chainsaw Operation and Supervision training conducted by an external trainer from the PNG Timber and Forestry Training College (TFTC).
The training followed a recommendation by the Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) for this training involving chainsaw operators and trainers of KBK Mine to eventuate. Hence, the company liaised with the FTC for an external trainer to come on site and conduct the training that ended last Thursday.
The training saw the chainsaw operators and supervisors of Ramu NiCo’s KBK Mine within its Mine Development section certified as grade 1 and grade 2 chainsaw operators, as well as grade 1 and grade 2 supervisors after the training.
Those that were certified with a certain grade or level previously, move up to the next and eventually onto the supervisory roles.
Francis Spairong from the TFTC, the external trainer who conducted the month-long training that included theory and practical lessons, spoke highly of the team on the ground in terms of ensuring safety is paramount to the process and also commended Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Limited for taking responsibility and acting upon a recommendation by the Mineral Resources Authority to conduct this training which is paramount for the safety of the chainsaw operators.
Mr Teatutai Sione, superintendent, Mining Development said, the refresher training is needed for the chainsaw operators because after some time, they need such training to polish up their skills.
He said: “The training has helped in ensuring that the chainsaw operators’ skills are polished and brought up to the desired standard required by the company and will help in doing their job much safer and better.”
This training is one of the many trainings conducted in ensuring safety at the workplace at Ramu NiCo’s KBK Mine is maintained.
