Eddie Jacob, 38, from Ganglau in the Saidos local level government in the Rai Coast District is a jack of all trades at Basamuk Refinery of Ramu NiCo Management(MCC) Limited.
He works at fix department where he does wielder and fitting but favorably performs several other tasks as work demands.
These include wielding, plumbing, fixing of corroding irons, building scaffold up to 33 meters for building and maintenance, and cutting iron bar and iron roofing.
He is now content with what he learnt from the company and strives to be a trades-man in his entire career.
Mr. Jacob has a certificate and experience in carpentry, wielding and plumbing but he had hand on and trained experience all others.
He applied for Ramu Nico in late 2022 and was accepted in January 2023. January of 2024 marked his full one year at Basamuk Refinery.
He commended Ramu NiCo that company taught him to be flexible in numerous other trades as he wanted.
Meanwhile two young employees, Hetchel Awan and Sengi Sangon who joined Basamuk Refinery in the fix department in October last year are also satisfied of being given a fulltime contract this month, January of 2024.
They said they had completed their probation on the first week of January and been happy to work fulltime. They signed their contract and work fulltime together under the fix department.
Mr. Jacob said he learnt most of the things in other trades he had not learnt in school.
“Things that I did not learn during my school are practically learnt here. Ramu NiCo is one of the biggest mineral companies in the country and the South Pacific where all machines and tools are available. With the help through the continuous in-house training and hand on jobs, I have learnt a lot,” said Mr. Jacob.
He will focus more on working hard to receive trades certificates for most of the trades that best suit him in the future.
The company is more focused on improving the skills and knowledges of its employees in 2024 and forward.
