Supporting education and carrier development has always been a core priority of the only Nickel and cobalt mining in Madang Province along its project footprint.

On the 15^th of August, Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Limited (RNML) donated school stationary, sports materials and food rations to Gawar Primary School and Tugyag Elementary school in Ward 13 of Saidor Local Level Government in Raicoast District. This was an effort to support the learning programs for the students.

The stationaries included Atlases, Pocket Dictionary, Pencils, Eraser, Rulers,  School Exercise Books, soccer balls and food items to the two schools. It was also an opportunity for Ramu NiCo representatives to talk and interact with the students at Gawar and Tugyag.

Ramu NiCo Basamuk Refinery staff took the lead with organizing the question and answer session with the students on how to look after their living environment, water and air as part of the company’s Health Safety and Environment (HSE) awareness to the students during the short visit.

Gawar Primary School Chairman Mr. Koi Sabom said Ramu NiCo Refinery is located in the community that the students come from and they have high hopes to work with RNML someday after completing their education and become professionals in their respective carriers.

Mr Sabom said the learning materials will go a long way with the learning and development of students who would someday be the vital human resources of Madang and Papua New Guinea.

“I also want to thank Ramu NiCo for funding a double Classroom early this year at Gawar through RNML Community Development Fund (CDF) program and the building is near Completion,” He said.

Mr Sabom said Gawar Primary currently has 639 students and is one of the feeder schools for Raicoast and Saidor High Schools in the district and appreciates the contribution from Ramu NiCo.

Ramu NiCo Corporate Health Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager Mr. Steven Opur said through the RNML slogan One Ramu NiCo, One Community, the largest Nickel and Cobalt mine in the country aims to motivate, encourage, influence and most of all to strengthen and maintain the bond between communities that the mine operates from, for the betterment of the future generation of the project footprint landowners.

“Our donation and the awareness today is to make students know that we are also here to support them in their learning to become future leaders in their district, province and the country,” Mr Opur said.

The team from Ramu NiCo also visited Tugyag Elementary school that houses 148 students and presented the stationaries and rations to the students.
