The Ramu Environment Plan was prepared in 1999, after extensive environmental impact assessment and studies between 1993 and 1999 by the Ramu Nickel Joint Venture. It was approved on 21 March 2000 by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) of the PNG Government following six independent peer reviews.
From 2006, in cooperation with leading international environmental firms, Ramu NiCo commenced a comprehensive environmental baseline survey. The survey assessed the basic environmental conditions of the project to provide data for future monitoring and analysis. By the end of 2008 approximately US$ 2 million was spent on the survey and associated activities.
Ramu NiCo was granted by DEC the Environmental Permit for project construction and operation on November 8th, 2007 (which was subsequently amended in 2009). The Environmental management plans before and during construction were approved respectively in 2006 and 2007.
